On Christmas Day I got email from MattDuignan, saying he was back in DC, after visiting NYC with Elizabeth, and Montreal with Meaghan. He said he was leaving DC the next day, December 26th, to fly to Thailand. We had talked about that earlier: he was going to meet people in Thailand for a holiday before returning to NZ. So I presume he is now in Thailand now, and I thought he was going to be at some resort. Considering the Tsunami, I wonder what kind of a time he's having in Thailand? -- RoBt
PippinBarr: All I've heard is that he's okay. He emailed his flatmates a couple of days ago to say so. Beyond that, I don't know. They weren't planning on trying to come back early as far as I know.

DonAld, AnNie, MikeMcGavin, MaTt end up in Auckland, by various means for HcC03
''Wednesday 29 October'' AnNie, MaTt, MikeMcGavin and DonAld are still trapped in Auckland (and DonAld's talk went quite well; unfortunately he only got the encouraging emails ''after'' giving it)
Robt sez: great to hear it went well! (This sent from a TV-internet service in my Oopsla hotel, literally across the street from Disneyland.)
AlexPotanin: Cool! Congratulations DonAld! (This was written during a very SelfIsh keynote address by DavidUngar via my VodaFone phone. )
''Saturday 1st November'' I think we're back, unless DonAld's plane was redirected to Mongolia. Both DonAld's and AnNie's presentations went really well and got lots of positive attention. Tranzrail carriages are uncomfortably hot in the evening but get progressively more freezing overnight. (MikeMcGavin)
DonAld can confirm that Mongolia looks surprisingly like Wellington, and is only a ~50 minute flight away from Auckland. Also, in his opinion QantasAirways' domestic service ''is'' better than AirNewZealand's, not just cheaper.

'''AlexPotanin, KiRk, AnNie, MaTt, MarkPritchard''' - Auckland Hostel during TechEd (updated via Telecom's CDMA)
RoBt: Cool! Tell us what's happening when you have the chance -- have fun!
It started with an introduction by a Maori group - just like our graduation. Then, Maori people were followed by a complete advertisement by Microsoft about "their passion for our success". Then a speaker came out and he is now talking, while I am at the back using an excellent Wireless connection. Finally, see ThreeAmigos page from last night at the hostel.
''19th of August, 2003''
AnNie, AlexPotanin, MaTt, and KiRk had lunch with EwanTempero. AnNie, AlexPotanin, and MaTt visited the UniversityOfAuckland with EwanTempero. It was cool, AlexPotanin liked their labs and their building very much. Unfortunately, we didn't see many graduate students. We also dropped by the MusicDepartment, but the ElectronicMusic people were out of their office and their email was broken.
'''CharcoalChikken''' - 11/7/03 - 12/7/03 - International Workshop on Organisational Semiotics (hopefully)
JamesKjx - June 12 2003 - Auckland, New Zealand (back later that day)
JamesKjx - June 16th 2003 - Auckland New Zealand (for 3 or more weeks). Perhaps I'll meet Alex in the airport.
Alex Potanin - June 6th, 2003 - Los Angeles, USA (RoBt: SMS: Where Alex was detained for overstaying because the US never got back the greeen stub of the I94W form after his last visit to the US; they let him in after saying that he now has to send documents proving he left the US last time, to the US embassy in London(!))
Alex Potanin - June 6th, 2003 - San Diego, USA (RoBt: GSM: Where Alex reports he has a fancy hotel room surrounded by palm trees and swimming pools, near the beach. SMS update: While registering for the conference, Alex got pressured into giving a panhandler US$3.) RoBt: June 7th Update: ACM awards ceremony: Alex gets 2nd place in the undergraduate division of the Student Research Competition.
Alex Potanin - June 8th, 2003 - Last night Andy, Andreas, his friend, Phillip and I tried to get some beer in Southern California. After struggling through the night, we managed to scrape one beer each. Here is why: the majority of stores stop selling alchohol at 11:30 p.m. Some "special" stores stop the tap at 1:00 a.m. This is on Saturday night we are talking about! You are not allowed to have alchohol in the open on the street and they only accept US drivers licence or Passport as a valid ID - for example ''Canadian'' drivers licences is not a valid form of ID. We were told by the manager of one of these places that (we had Scott, Canadian, Irish, Kiwi, and American) he can accept (although breaking the rules) the canadian drivers licence, because it is "kinda close" and there is no way he can accept Ireland and New Zealand drivers licence, because they obviously don't prove the age of the holder "beyond reasonable doubt". We went back to the hotel around 12:30 a.m. arguing as to the ways pubs can possibly make money in US. We haven't came up with any.
Also, during awards some guy got one for inventing Java and some three guys for inventing RSA encryption. Got the photo with the former, but when trying to get a photo with the latter three, my camera ran out of memory and so did Andy's. So no photo. :-P They seemed nice though.
AngelaMartin - My Trip to Italy
23 May 2003 - Made it to Singapore in one piece, enjoying the use of the internet cafe. Scored on my first flight got a row of 3 seats to myself, so had a cat nap. Next stop Frankfurt
02 June 2003 - Made it to Venice! You'd think there would be easy internet access at a computer science conference, but nope you needed to be much more technologically advanced than me (wireless laptop no less). Conference went really well, rabbited on a bit too much in my presentation but everyone loved the title (thanks James). Got to meet lots of really interesting people (and to name drop for a tick - Kent Beck, Ward Cunningham, Jim Highsmith and David Parnas plus many other really interesting people. For now, back to the sightseeing
05 June 2003 - Made it to Florence! Loved Venice, particularly in the lo-light of the setting sun. Favourite thing was eating pizza for dinner by one of the smaller canals near my hotel.
09 June 2003 - Made it to Rome! Florence was not quite what I expected. My favourite thing was probably the food there was an awesome pastry shop just down the road from my hotel. I think there is too much to see in Florence for me to really appreciate it but Michealangelos David and his painting of the mary and child where pretty awesome. I also enjoyed my trip to a little town called San Giamiano which was a really quaint litte medieval town although I guess the reason it is so quaint is because of the plaque, helpful info provided by a tour guide. There is a lot of history here! I now look forward to checking out Rome, I am going on a couple of tours of the Vatican and Collosuem as I discovered in Florence that you can appreciate things a lot more that way.
16 June 2003 - Made it back to Wellington (and am now awake enuf to use a computer)!
RoBt: Wow! TheSunNeverSetsOnElvis! AngelaMartin - nope and we even get together on the other side of the world.
